Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This is one of the IBDs (other one is ulcerative colitis), and a serious one. Before going ahead with how coconut helps in Crohn’s disease, let me explain a bit about the disease itself and its causes. This will be helpful in understanding action of coconut oil for this disorder.
Crohn’s disease causes inflammation of lining of digestive tract in humans. This inflammation can have lot of implications including abdominal pain, weight loss, anemia, severe diarrhoea, etc. Crohn’s disease is also known to cause malnutrition too. Ulcerations can occur at any part of the digestive tract.
The exact causes of Crohn’s disease is not known till yet.
Diet and Crohn’s disease
According to various research, there are certain kinds of food which can adversely affect the disease. For example dairy products fall under this list. You need to consult a doctor regarding this as every patient may show different reactions to foods.
Coconut oil and Crohn’s disease
What makes coconut oil helpful in Crohn’s disease? It is the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties of coconut oil which play an important part here. Not only this the healing properties of coconut oil also helps in killing micro-organism which may be responsible for the disease (as coconut oil improves digestive tract health in general). So coconut oil is believed to have both preventive and curative effect on Crohn’s disease.
Research studies conducted on mice point out that medium chain triglycerides of coconut oil have a soothing effect on the inflammation of intestine.
In his book Coconut Oil Miracle, Bruce Fife provides several examples of Crohn’s disease patients whose conditions improved after including coconut oil in the diet. Mr. Fife also believes that while the exact cause of Crohn’s disease is not known but as coconut oil is effective in killing other bacteria which cause stomach ulcers such as H. pyloris it’s anti-microbial action should also be effective against the microorganism causing Crohn’s disease.
I would say that the debate whether coconut oil is beneficial in Crohn’s disease or not is still open. There are testimonials of people who have benefited from coconut oil while there are medical practitioners who believe otherwise.
